Vesuvius, composed in 1999, was commissioned by The Revelli Foundation for The Paynter Project.

In composing Vesuvius, Ticheli “started with the main theme, which was left over from an earlier work, Radiant Voices, and sat around for years until I found the right piece for it. It suggested the image of a bacchanal in ancient Rome.”

This wild, uninhibited form of dance could have represented a last celebration during the final doomed days of Pompeii when Mount Vesuvius, in A.D. 79, erupted with such force and fury that it completely engulfed the city.

The work is approximately nine minutes in length.
