Variations was originally written by Vaughan Williams for brass band.
Historically, concert bands and brass bands had their beginnings, in part, with the fifes, drums, and trumpets associated with European courts and armies. Early military music generally fell into one of two categories: cavalry music or infantry music. Trumpets and kettledrums were associated with the cavalry music, while bagpipes and fifes were associated with the infantry.
The brass band is considered a descendant of the cavalry band.
