Symphony No. 4 is based on original thematic material along with the hymn tune Old Hundred. The work is constructed as one continuous movement in contrast to the traditional practice of multiple, independent movements.
Conceptually, the symphony is considered by Maslanka to be a “connected series of dreams” (or episodes) about Old Hundred. This episodic approach provides interesting possibilities for the development of thematic material, and Maslanka makes use of the technique to take both performer and listener on an unpredictable emotional journey.
The presence of Old Hundred is important to the overall form, not only for the symbolism it represents but also as a unifying element across the various episodes. Likewise, many of the original themes are hymn-like in nature and, thus, provide consistency to the overall form.
