Symphonies of Wind Instruments is scored for three flutes, two oboes, English horn, three clarinets in B-flat, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns in F, three trumpets in B-flat, three trombones, and tuba.

It contains elements of Stravinsky’s Russian period in his stylized use of Russian folk song and dance, and the formal structure and emotional detachment of his neo- classical period.

The Symphonies of Wind Instruments is highly organic in that most of the germinal ideas are presented in the first twenty-eight measures.

The work is cast in three sections, beginning with an exposition which includes several Russian folk melodies. The second section is a wild Russian dance, and the third and final section is the austere and beautiful chorale memorializing Debussy.
