Southwestern Sketches is scored for “complete band,” including two bass trombone parts, two baritone (euphonium) parts, and string bass.

There is no baritone saxophone part, although the composer calls for contrabassoon and contrabass clarinet.

Percussion includes timpani, snare drum, bass drum, bongos, gong, xylophone, glockenspiel, and celesta.

With the exception of the rambunctious section at measure 135, scoring is sparse (reminiscent of the Sinfonietta by Ingolf Dahl) and requires careful attention to rest counting and complete accuracy.
