The four movements, titled “The Midnight Cry,” “Wondrous Love,” “Exhilaration,” and The Soldier’s Return” (also includes “Thorny Desert”), are based on actual pieces found in the musical companion published in 1854.
The original tunes are singable, memorable, and mostly three-part with the melody in the tenor. The pentatonic scale is commonly employed.
Grantham’s contemporary settings do preserve the energy and integrity of the originals, but they present the tunes in a way that exploits the qualities of the wind ensemble.
The use of complex harmony, suspensions, bitonal tensions, and extensive percussion are characteristic.
Southern Harmony is approximately ten minutes and thirty seconds in length.
