The Serenade was originally written for solo organ in 1965 as Op. 22 and was premiered at the composer’s own wedding.

It was arranged by the composer for concert band in 1980 and dubbed Op. 22c. (Op. 22b is an arrangement of the same piece for brass band.)

While lasting only three minutes, the piece is a marvelous example of craft in service of melody, a miniature gem of flowing grace.

Its unpretentious surface style hides a subtle, unbalanced rhythmic feel and uneven meter, giving the piece a character and personality all its own.
