Scenes was composed in 1971 for Donald Hunsberger to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the Eastman Wind Ensemble.

It is a virtuosic work scored for an expanded orchestral wind section, piano, celesta, timpani, and four percussionists.

The wind instrumentation is as follows: four flutes (3rd and 4th doubling piccolo), four oboes (4th doubling English horn), three B-flat clarinets, three bassoons, five horns, four B-flat trumpets, three trombones, and tuba.
