This composition utilizes contrasting melodies from two Wisconsin folk songs, The Pinery Boy and The Turkey Song.
“The Pinery Boy” tells of the heartbreak of a young woman who learns that her lover drowned while working on the river. It is set to a somber melody, notable for the dramatic upward leap of a minor sixth in the first measure.
The text of “The Turkey Song” is much less serious. The musical character is much faster and lighter, and brings to mind lively folk-like music played for dancing.
