On a Southern Hymnsong was commissioned by Betty Bates, director of the Scottsboro High School Symphonic Band in Scottsboro, Alabama. The work joins a series of hymnsong compositions based on traditional hymns indigenous to America.

On a Southern Hymnsong was written for full band instrumentation. Required percussion includes orchestral bells, timpani, bar chimes, triangle, tambourine, snare drum, suspended and crash cymbals, temple blocks, and bass drum.
