Mosaic is the first movement of Tippett’s Concerto for Orchestra, written in 1962–1963 and dedicated to Benjamin Britten “with affection and admiration in the year of his fiftieth birthday.”

This three-movement work employs winds, percussion, piano, and harp for the first movement; strings, piano, and harp for the second; and both ensembles combined for the third.

The composer has certified performance of the first movement by itself.

Interestingly, the original score provides no specific title for this first movement, but the designation adopted is an apt description of the compositional process involved in its creation.
