Molly on the Shore is a setting of two reel tunes, the first being entitled “Molly on the Shore” and the second being “Temple Reel.”

Neither tune was collect- ed by Grainger; his source for both melodies was The Complete Petrie Collection of Ancient Irish Music, collected by Sir Charles Villiers Stanford.

All in all, there are no less than 1,582 melodies in the collection. In the setting Grainger “strove to imbue the accompanying parts that make up the harmonic texture with a melodic character not too unlike that of the underlying reel tune.”
