The composer writes,

The Variations’s small, curious theme was taken from a set of twenty short piano pieces that a young Prokofiev composed between 1915 and 1917, and to which he gave the title Visions Fugitives. I chose the second piece of the set because of its several strongly contrasting elements and moods, remarkable in a piece of such brevity, which suggested development into a much longer work. Each of the five variations assumes the character of a different musical genre or type of composition.
