Lion of Lucerne was written by James Curnow and published in 1986. It was inspired when the composer viewed the magnificent sculpture by the same name carved into the face of a rock in Lucerne, Switzerland.

The approximately six-minute work is built upon three main themes: “Majesty – The Sculpture” (Maestoso), “Spirit of the Swiss Guard” (Allegro con spirito), and “Unser Leben” or “Life’s Journey” (Andante cantabile).

The work bears Curnow’s stamp of solid instrumental doubling and compositional devices typical of the band overtures genre.
