J’ai été au bal is a composition of ten minutes’ duration, commissioned in 1999 by the University of Texas–Austin Wind Ensemble.

The conductor (Jerry Junkin) gave no restrictions to Grantham as to length, difficulty, or scope in the commission, but Grantham knew from the outset that he wanted to include some Cajun/Zydeco music in the composition.

As the title implies, the composition is associated with dancing and is comprised of three large, connected sections. The first and last sections rely heavily on Cajun folk song, and the middle third of the composition is built around early twentieth century jazz music of New Orleans.
