From a Dark Millennium is a single continuous movement based loosely on an austere poem by the composer. This poem, which is not included in the score, is as follows:

The work is scored for woodwinds, brass, piano and celesta, and an expanded percussion section. Emphasis is placed on the equality of timbre between these four elements.
