The inspiration for the work came from four paintings by French artist Georges Seurat (1859–1891).
Seurat, along with several other young artists, helped to establish the Société des Artistes Indépendants, a democratic group at the center of the neo-impressionistic movement.
Although the Seurat paintings provided the stimulus for French Impressions, there is no musical correlation between the artist’s pointillistic style and Woolfenden’s compositional techniques.
Rather, the colors, tone, and mood of the artworks are the impetus for the composition.
