Articulations should be as accurate as possible. The intensity and movement of the music should be equal to the phrasing, articulation, rhythms, and principles of the notation. This is a twentieth century work with twentieth century sounds; it should be approached with a straightforward interpretation that attempts to replicate the score’s intention as closely as possible.

There are parts in the score containing instructions that require specific balances between woodwinds and brass. Tempo relationships between sections are important. Contrasts between sections of each movement are vital. Also important is the use of silence and decay (particularly in the metallic percussion resonance).
