Ere the World Began to Be was commissioned by the Central Middle School Concert Winds and Percussion of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Laura Kautz Sindberg, Conductor, in 1996.

The work is based on the thirteenth century plainchant “Divinum Mysterium,” better known to many as “Of the Father’s Love, Begotten.” The title comes from the second line of the hymnal version.

The work is based upon an earlier setting of the chant by the composer for brass quintet. However, the wind band version is more expanded and developed.
