The West Genessee High School Band of Camillus, New York, commissioned the work for their performance at the 1970 conference of the New York State School Music Association in Kiamesha Lake, New York.

Band director Bruce Burritt decid- ed to commission Chance because the band had recently performed Incantation and Dance.
