British Isles Suite was commissioned by the Wisconsin Youth Band Directors’ Association and received its premiere performance on September 18, 1999, by the Wisconsin Youth Band Directors’ Association Honor Band. It is a three-movement suite based entirely on folk music sources. Daehn’s choice of folk songs provides continuity and contrast within each movement and to the overall structure of the work.
“Marching Song” is a martial movement based on two Welsh folk songs: “Britons, Raise Your Banners High” and “March for the Men of Harlech.”
“Barbara Allen” is based on a traditional air of the same name.
“Farewell, Dundee” combines the lilting, dance-like tune of “Adieu, Dundee” with the well-known ballad “Auld Lang Syne.”
The entire work is approximately six minutes and thirty seconds long.
