An Irish Interlude, composed in 1986, is an original work for band in one movement. It is dedicated to St. Mary’s Concert Band, Derry, North Ireland. A heartfelt letter to the composer from Anthony Carlin, the Director of St. Mary’s Concert Band, was the inspiration for this composition. Carlin wrote of the conflict and strife that permeated daily life due to the political situation in Ireland. However, he also wrote of the power of music to heal and create an experience of beauty. Barker has recently composed An Irish Ayre for concert band that is similar and worthy of note.
