American Games is comprised of an introduction, seven movements, and a coda, which are connected without pause for a total duration of approximately twenty-two minutes.

The work is scored for a slightly expanded orchestral wind section: three flutes (2^nd doubling alto flute, 3rd doubling piccolo), three oboes, E-flat clarinet (which may optionally be doubled with the alto saxophone part), three clarinets in B-flat and A, alto saxophone, two bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets in B-flat, two tenor trombones, bass trombone, euphonium, two tubas, timpani, and three percussionists.
