When Donald White submitted his newest composition to his publisher in 1974, its title was Aeterna Christi munera, however the publishers changed the title to Ambrosian Hymn Variants, and so it remains today.

“Aeterna Christi munera” (The Eternal Gifts of Christ the King) is an Ambrosian hymn found in the Historical Anthology of Music (HAM); its simple lines create an ideal subject for this theme and variations.

The work is well suited for high school and university bands with its modal-like melody and challenging harmonic structure. Because the rehearsal numbers are oddly spaced it would improve the efficiency of rehearsals if all players and the conductor numbered their measures.
