A Child’s Embrace was composed in honor of the birth of the composer’s first child, Katherine Anne Young, who was born on January 18, 2000.

The work was commissioned by the Traverse City East Junior High School Band and was first performed in Traverse City, Michigan, on March 16, 2000, under the direction of Peter Deneen.

Southern Music Company in San Antonio, Texas, published A Child’s Embrace in 2001.

The work is five minutes long; supplemental European parts are available.
