Dombek, Stephen

Stephen Dombek (b. 1953) began his compositional career at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana. He continued his musical studies at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, where he earned both Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. While there he studied composition with Bernard Heiden, Harvey Sollberger, and Earle Brown. During his graduate studies, Dombek server as Director of Music at the Evangelical Community Church in Bloomington and wrote numerous pieces for their church choir, many of which were released on a long-playing record by Enharmonic Records.

 

After graduate school, Dombek moved to Santa Barbara, California, to join the faculty of Westmont College as Associate Professor of Choral Music. He soon became Assistant Conductor/Chorus Master of the Santa Barbara Civic Light Opera and later served as Music Director of the Gold Coast Community Chorus out of Ventura, California. He also spent five years as Music Director of the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony.

 

Now retired from those positions, Dombek has returned to arranging and composing. He has done numerous arrangements and orchestrations for the Santa Barbara Choral Society, including a “choreographic medley” of Beatles songs that was performed by the Santa Barbara State Street Ballet, (choreographed by William Soleau) and the Santa Barbara Choral Society and Orchestra.  He now serves as Composer-in-Residence for the Quire of Voyces directed by Nathan Kreitzer.

 

Dombek lives in Santa Barbara, California, with his wife Mary.
