With the piano taking on a strong role in musical leadership of Catholic liturgies and providing voluntaries during the celebration, there is a need for keyboard repertoire during the liturgy. Three collections published by GIA fill part of that need. Their contents were written by Malcolm Kogut, an upstate New York musician with a background that is as broad as it is varied.
An avid sports fan, he sees the combination of his music talent with his interest in sports as a divine joke. "God played a cruel impractical joke on me by endowing me with a passion for music and sports. He also left out the silver spoon, which is a necessity for both." There may not be a silver spoon, but there is a golden pen, which has provided Malcolm a facile and satisfying composition style.
