"Sounds Like" - "Looks Like" connections are used as a nonverbal method for teaching melodic pattern reading. Melodic patterns are limited to one, two, and three tones. Letter names and note values should be taught in conjunction with melodic pattern reading but not as a primary method for teaching melodic reading. Note-by-note letter naming can develop a very bad note-by-note reading habit analogous to learning to read language letter-by-letter. The emphasis here is on melodic pattern memorization and melodic pattern recognition. It's all about connecting finger, slide, and mallet patterns with notated melodic patterns.
