Dialogues, Volume 1: Morten Lauridsen, Paul Salamunovich, and James Jordan

Musical Conversations between Composers and Conductors

by Morten Lauridsen / James Jordan

2008

"I have waited for this piece my entire life."
--Paul Salamunovich, referring to "Lux Aeterna" by Morten Lauridsen

How valuable would it be to be able to listen in on a conversation between three of the most influential figures in choral music of the past thirty years—composer Morten Lauridsen and conductors Paul Salamunovich and James Jordan?

Recorded in 2008 over a two-day period at the Hollywood Hills home of the composer, these colleagues and friends participated in a discussion to help conductors and choirs understand the music of Morten Lauridsen. Lauridsen and Salamunovich share details of their friendship and collaboration of almost thirty years.

All three share important information about the performance, rehearsal, conducting, and interpretation of Lauridsen’s works, which have become central to the canon of choral literature. These recordings feature:

  • All musical examples played by the composer, providing insights into tempo, phrasing, and overall interpretative elements
  • Advice regarding conducting issues
  • Advice about choral tone required in these works
  • Information about compositional devices
  • Interpretative suggestions by all three
  • In-depth harmonic and musical analysis
  • Insight into the how and why of the compositional process

Morten Lauridsen is widely recognized as perhaps the leading contemporary choral composer in the world. He has served as Professor of Com-position at the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music for more than thirty years, and his numerous compositions have appeared on more than 100 recordings from a wide range of ensembles.
Paul Salamunovich has an illustrious career as one of the most re-spected choral directors in America, has conducted the scores of more than 100 feature films, and has served as guest conductor in hundreds of locations around the world. He is currently Music Director Emeritus of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
