This well-known early English melody has been
arranged countless times, but
I dare say none of them with
the artistic and innovative bent
of Steve Pilkington.
Careful
attention needs to be paid
to the minor second clashes,
added notes and the hemiola
three-against-two in the tenors
and basses.
A simple, pure tone
will bring out the intended
dissonance and help with
intonation, especially at cadences.
The optional handbell motif
for seven bells adds greatly to
this piece that must be sung a
cappella to achieve maximum
effect.
