A shape-note Ascension hymn from late 18th-century colonial America. Though scored for SATB voices, in the music of this robust tradition, men and women shared each of the vocal lines, in effect creating an 8-part texture. The open intervals, characteristic of this period, produce a distinctly early American sound.
