There Is No Rose of Such Virtue
2004, GIA Publications, Inc.
Whereas Benjamin Britten’s
version of this medieval English carol
from Ceremony of Carols stands out
as definitive and time-tested, this
new setting is gorgeous and equally
refined.
It requires more female
voices than men for the SSA word
painting on “God in persons three”
and divisi on “Gaudeamus.”
The
augmentation on the final repetition
of “transeamus” brings this ravishing
piece to a subtle and beautiful
ending.
Exquisite.
