The approval of Benedictine Abbot Gregory Pollan's revision of the Grail Psalter for liturgical use in the United States has enriched the English-speaking world with a translation faithful to the original Hebrew, informed by usage in the Roman Rite, and contoured toward song. In The Lyric Psalter, Marty Haugen and Tony Alonso have crafted musical settings for these new texts eminently suitable as Responsorial Psalms for the Liturgy of the Word at Mass. Written to the prescribed liturgical structure, these settings provide: 1) antiphons truly singable by a congregation, paired with a descant for those communities wishing to adorn the antiphon musically once the congregation is secure in its part; 2) verses in "psalm tune" style (i.e., a notated melody for each verse sharing a fundamental melodic curve) intended to be sung by a cantor or schola; and 3) keyboard and guitar chord accompaniments. Best of all, many of the settings retain or modify melodies that have become congregational favorites from earlier volumes of the Psalms for the Church Year. For those worshiping communities seeking musical settings of Responsorial Psalms other than psalm-tones, Gelineau-style "pulsed" tones, or through-composed pieces, The Lyric Psalter provides a rich pastoral resource.
