Meet the GIA Publications, Inc. Advisory Board

In early 2011, GIA Publications, Inc. established a new Advisory Board to help guide the company's future publishing decisions.

The Advisory Board is chaired by Thomas Stehle, the Board also includes Diana Macalintal, Delores Martinez, Stephen Pishner, John Miller, and Robert Wolf.

Working together with GIA's Vice President for Church Music David Anderson, the Advisory Board will serve as a think tank for future initiatives and will also help serve as eyes and ears for GIA in identifying trends and needs of church musicians throughout the United States.

"All of us at GIA are extremely fortunate to have such a talented and diverse Advisory Board to help guide us as we endeavor to publish liturgical music resources of the highest caliber," said David Anderson, Vice President of GIA.

Here is a little more about each of these leaders in the world of church music and liturgy:

photoThomas Stehle, Chair

Tom Stehle is Pastoral Associate for Liturgy and Director of Music Ministries at the Cathedral of St. Matthew in Washington, DC. He has been active in full-time music ministry for 33 years. A native of Butler, Pennsylvania, he has served in the Dioceses of Pittsburgh, PA, Peoria, IL, and for the last 23 years in the Archdiocese of Washington, DC.

In January 2008, Tom was appointed by then Archbishop Wuerl as Director of Music for the Papal Mass of Pope Benedict XVI at National Park in Washington. Under his direction, four choirs comprised of 635 singers and instrumentalists, and the Washington Symphonic Brass provided music for more than three hours for a stadium filled with 55,000 worshippers. In recognition of this work, Tom received the Papal Benemerenti Award on Easter Sunday at the Cathedral the following year. Duquesne University, his undergraduate alma mater, honored him with the 2008 Mind, Heart and Spirit Award for outstanding service to the Church.

Tom is active professionally, serving as vice chair of the board of directors of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM), after having served ten years as the chair of the Council of Chapters for the same organization. He is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, Conference of Roman Catholic Cathedral Musicians, and American Guild of Organists. He also taught a course on liturgy for more than 16 years for the EPS program of Trinity University in their Washington, DC and Northern, VA programs.

Tom is a frequent clinician and speaker on topics of liturgy, church architecture, and music, and he has published articles in professional journals and magazines, including Pastoral Liturgy, Ministry and Liturgy, The Liturgical Singer, A.I.M., and Pastoral Music, including an article on music making in a cathedral setting in the August–September 2009 Pastoral Music magazine.

In addition to his undergraduate work at Duquesne University, Tom also earned two graduate degrees (M.A., 1990 and M.Arch., 1997) from the Catholic University of America, where he was the recipient of the Caldwell Organ Scholarship and the Magi Endowment for Liturgical Arts. He also studied choral conducting at Westminster Choir College of Rider University.

Tom is honored to lead this advisory board for GIA as it listens to the needs of pastoral musicians and responds with musical offerings that bring the church to life.

photoDiana Macalintal

Diana Macalintal is Director of Worship for the Diocese of San Jose, CA, and holds a Master of Arts in Theology, cum laude, from Saint John’s University (Collegeville, MN).

Diana has served as a liturgist and music and catechumenate director in campus, parish, and diocesan ministries for over 25 years. She is an adjunct faculty member of the Institute in Pastoral Ministries of Saint Mary’s, University of Minnesota (Winona) and serves as a team member of the North American Forum on the Catechumenate.

Diana has authored numerous articles on liturgy, music, and the catechumenate. She was a contributing author for The Catholic Connections Handbook for Middle Schoolers and wrote The Eucharist Catechist’s Guide (both Saint Mary’s Press, 2009).

Diana also serves on the Editorial Committee of the hymnal Gather, Third Edition, published by GIA (2011).

Diana founded and maintains a blog for the Diocese of San Jose called “Work of the People” and is a co-founder of TeamRCIA.com.

photoJohn Julius Miller, MM, FAGO

John Miller serves the Archdiocese of Newark as Director of Music Ministries for the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, as Music Coordinator for the Office of Worship, as Artistic Director of the Cathedral Concert Series, and as Chapter Director for the Newark Chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM).

John has served as solo organist with the New Jersey Symphony and is conductor of the Cathedral Symphony and Chorus. He is featured as conductor on With Songs of Jubilation (GIA) A Christmas Carol Sing (Pro Organo), and Salve Mater under (DMAS).

John is in demand as both a performer and a clinician in the areas of choral conducting and organ performance. He maintains a busy schedule of concerts and workshops as a speaker in the field of liturgical music. His European performances have taken him to Rome, Venice, Leipzig, Prague, Salzburg, and Vienna.

John holds a Bachelor of Music, cum laude, in Organ Performance and Sacred Music at Duquesne University (Pittsburgh, PA). After earning a double Master of Music, with distinction, in Organ Performance and Choral Conduction from Westminster Choir College (Princeton, NJ), he was awarded the highest honor from the American Guild of Organists with the conferring of the Fellowship Certificate.

John is happy and honored to serve on the Advisory Board for GIA Publications and looks forward to collaborating with colleagues to continue GIA's mission of offering quality resources in the area of liturgical music.

photoDolores Martinez

Dr. Dolores Martinez presently serves as Director of Music Ministries at St. Mark the Evangelist in San Antonio, TX, where she directs the principal parish choir and accompanies other masses on piano and organ.

Prior to returning full time to the parish, she served the Archdiocese of San Antonio as Director of the Office of Worship from September 1993 to June 2006. Her previous experience in liturgy and music includes serving as Director of the Office of Worship for the Diocese of Lubbock, TX (1983–87) and as Director of Liturgy and/or Liturgical Music for several parishes throughout Texas (Lubbock, Slaton, Austin, and Duncanville). She was the Music Director as well as one of four cantors for the outdoor mass celebrated by Pope John Paul II on his visit to San Antonio in 1987.

Delores is a clinician for Oregon Catholic Press, presenting workshops in English, Spanish, or both on liturgical topics and liturgical music. Her music has been published by Oregon Catholic Press in the second edition of Flor y Canto and other Spanish bilingual collections. She also serves on the Editorial Committee for the hymnal Oramos Cantando, published by GIA (2011).

Dolores is a liturgist/musician team member with the North American Forum on the Catechumenate and is also a member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM). She is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Southwest Liturgical Conference, where she chaired the Hispanic Liturgical Resources Committee, and was also an advisor to the Bishops’ Committee on the Liturgy (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops).

Dolores received her Ph.D. in Fine Arts in 1990 from Texas Tech University (Lubbock, TX) as well as her Master of Music in Piano Performance in 1979. She received her Bachelor of Music Education (all levels, choral music) from the University of Texas at El Paso in 1976.

photoStephen Pishner

Stephen Pishner serves the parish community of All Saints Catholic Church in Bridgeport, WV, where he has been Director of Music “officially” for 27 years, and since 1990 has also served as Director of Liturgy. He also serves on the Liturgical Music Commission for the Diocese of Wheeling–Charleston, helping with workshops for pastoral musicians and with diocesan events. He works with the parish choir as well as youth and adult cantors and various combinations of liturgical ensembles in preparation for upcoming liturgies.

Stephen is also active in liturgical music planning and accompaniment for Catholic school liturgies. He is very active with the West Virginia Italian Festival, helping with the music needs of the festival, including a well-attended outdoor mass, for which he gathers and prepares a large choir with instrumentalists. He has also helped with music preparation for the Wheeling–Charleston diocesan pilgrimages to the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington DC, as well as serving as organist.

Stephen coordinates and hosts Evenings of Music and Prayer, workshops, diocesan and parish events and concerts at All Saints with GIA composers David Haas, Lori True, Michael Joncas, and Marty Haugen, as well as other musical groups and ensembles. He is a GIA composer as well.

Stephen attended 12 years of Catholic school at St. Mary’s/Notre Dame (Clarksburg, WV) and later received his Bachelor of Music Education, with an emphasis in Pipe Organ, from West Virginia Wesleyan College (Buckhannon).

Stephen is very pleased and honored to have been asked to serve on the Advisory Board of GIA. The music of GIA has been the heart of the music he uses for his pastoral planning in various liturgical settings. He looks forward to working with the GIA Advisory Board and hopes that what he brings to the group will be of use to pastoral musicians and to GIA.

photoRobert Wolf

Dr. Robert Wolf has served as Pastoral Director of Music at Saint Patrick Church in Brighton, MI, for 16 years, celebrating his 37th year of full-time music ministry in the Catholic Church. He functions as principal organist, choral director, and head of the music ministry staff. He also teaches liturgical music in the parish school, as well as private piano and organ. He has held similar posts at Saint Michael Church in Monroe, MI, and Sacred Heart Church, in Dearborn, MI.

Robert is Founder and Director of the Lansing (MI) Chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM), he serves as the national President DMMD (Directors of Music Ministry Division) Board of Directors of NPM, and he is National Chair of NPM Academic Scholarships. He is also a member of the Lansing Diocesan Worship Commission, and he functions as Treasurer of the Detroit Area Chapter of Choristers Guild.

Robert holds a Bachelor of Music Education from Butler University (Indianapolis, IN), a Master of Church Music from The University of Michigan, and a Doctorate in Organ Performance from The University of Michigan. He also did graduate work in Hymnology with Erik Routley in Princeton, NJ.

Robert is author of Index of Organ Works based on Hymns from Worship, Third Edition (GIA). He has also functioned as a clinician for many workshops concerning liturgical music.

Robert states, “I feel that GIA has a long reputation as a tremendous leader in the field of outstanding hymnals and liturgical music for our Church. I am honored to serve on the GIA Advisory Board, listening to the needs of our colleagues and assisting in the wonderful continued vision, growth, and expansion of GIA Music. It is especially necessary in this time of change and renewal in the Church that GIA continues to stay in the forefront, meeting our most essential need for sterling, diversified, best-of-all-worlds, dynamic ritual and spiritual music, psalmody, hymnals, and resources for God’s holy people. May GIA ever touch our hearts, souls, and lives with music that is filled with praise to God and inspires us to live that call to serve in love as Jesus taught us.”
