CD Enclosed; Foreword by Helen Kemp

"In his constant search for vocal and choral excellence, Dr. Jordan has created and shared volumes of valuable, idealistic, and practical information. One of his goals, it seems to this writer, is to inspire the artisan to become the artist. I believe my own personal mantra also embraces the concepts so eloquently written in Dr. Jordan's volumes: Body, Mind, Spirit, Voice...it takes the WHOLE person to sing and rejoice."

- Helen Kemp, from the Foreword

This new text by James Jordan summarizes his twenty-five years of experience teaching and reinforcing healthy vocal technique for choirs at all levels of development.

The book is a comprehensive guide to teaching vocal technique through designing an efficient choral warm-up that gives the choir "tools" to sing and hear better.

Among the topics presented are alignment (using Alexander Body Mapping principles), inhalation, exhalation, support, resonance, vowel colors, leaps, range extension, crescendo/decrescendo, martellato, staccato, teaching procedures for diction (plus general diction guidelines), teaching and reinforcing rhythm and consistent tempo, and strategies for teaching intonation. This is a comprehensive guide for choral directors that:

  • helps conductors plan and implement efficient choral warm-ups
  • builds healthy voices within the choral rehearsal
  • provides vocalises that have accompaniments complete with modulations upward and downward
  • categorizes vocalises according to specific vocal objectives

This book also includes twenty-four Core Vocal Exercises written by Dr. Jordan and Marilyn Shenenberger. The exercises feature piano accompaniments complete with modulations and a CD for demonstration and classroom use. Also available separately are The Choral Warm-Up Teaching Cards-index cards that quickly summarize teaching techniques presented in the book for quick reference and use in the rehearsal. The Modal Core Vocal Exercises, while published in the text, are also available separately. The teaching and rehersal cards are designed as quick references to the choral warm-up principles and are organized and indexed for easy use.

James Jordan, conductor of the Westminster Williamson Voices, as well as the Westminster Chapel Choir for more than a decade, both at Westminster Choir College of Rider University, is recognized as one of the nation's preeminent conductors, writers, and innovators in choral teaching. He is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Music Education at West Chester State University.
