That You May Have Life – DVD

Marty Haugen

From its riveting beginning to its triumphant finale, this live performance of Marty Haugen’s new musical, That You May Have Life: Musical Stories from the Gospel of John, proclaims in song a passionate declaration of the Gospel of John. Out of darkness the light slowly dawns to a burst of color. Born of a low drone comes the fervid invocation, "En arch¯e ¯en ho logos," "In the beginning was the Word." From Jesus' intimate dialogues with Nicodemus and the woman at the well to his very public encounters with the man born blind and the mourners at Lazarus' tomb, you are immediately drawn into these beloved stories—stories steeped in an ancient history of human emotion and glorified still in our Rite of Christian Initiation.

Under the inspired direction of Marilee Mahler, this vastly talented, multigenerational cast delivers a stellar performance that brings the characters to life. Tony Alonso, as Jesus, is positively mesmerizing. His powerful voice and commanding presence effortlessly convey Christ's spirit of unconditional love. David Haas as Nicodemus, ValLimar Jansen as Mary, Ray East as the Evangelist, and Mary Preus as the Samaritan woman bring passion and a lifetime of experience to their roles. Other cast members include Serenity Fisher as Mary of Bethany, Melissa Cuddy as Martha of Bethany, Jake Mahler as the man born blind, and a host of gifted students from Benilde-St. Margaret's High School in St. Louis Park, Minnesota. These emerging new voices in sacred music introduce an electrifying, youthful energy.

The DVD also contains enlightening commentary by a truly inspired woman of faith, Pastor Susan Briehl, who breaks open the word (the logos) and invites you into a deeper understanding of belief and faith. Director Marilee Mahler and Haugen himself also offer revealing accounts of their artistic processes, which provide invaluable guidance for those who undertake future performances.

That You May Have Life was expertly videotaped by Common World Productions at a live performance April 26, 2005, at Stages Theatre, Hopkins Center for the Arts, Hopkins, Minnesota. The multi-camera shoot allowed for a beautifully panoramic view, and the editing is superb.

That You May Have Life presents us with an opportunity to meet the one we are all seeking. It allows us to encounter Jesus, the Word made flesh, face to face. Dive into the Gospel of John. Find what you’re looking for. Come and see That You May Have Life.
