CLASSIC SONGS and RHYMES
FOR YOUNG CHILDREN!

Press Release

Classic songs and rhymes featured in new series of books
for young children (birth to age 3) and adults

For generations, the songs and rhymes of American folk culture have delighted children, creating a "hushed wonder" at playtime. No fireworks, no crazy musical arrangements, just adult and child connecting with rhymes and music. These treasures once were passed from parent or grandparent to child, yet in recent years, with changes in technology and family structure, they have been in danger of being lost and forgotten.

A new series of books by John M. Feierabend brings back this music and poetry of America! The Book of Wiggles and Tickles (G-4976), The Book of Bounces (G-4975), The Book of Lullabies (G-4979), The Book of Simple Songs and Circles (G-4978), and The Book of Tapping and Clapping (G-4977) are filled with the type of educational play parents are craving! Rhymes, songs, and games bring our heritage to the newest generation by connecting them to a rich repertoire of folk music, while building their musical sensibilities which can help in their appreciation and understanding of music later in life!

Feierabend, an early childhood music specialist and professor at the Hartt School of Music, has spent decades compiling songs and rhymes that our parents and grandparents sang to us when we were children. In the same vein as classics like "This little piggy..." and "Where is Thumbkin..." the high-quality children's literature in these books has withstood the test of time, inspiring wonder, joy, and laughter in infants and toddlers for well over a hundred years!

Feierabend reacquaints us with a simple way to make a connection between adult and child, to help develop a young child's imagination and musical sensibilities, and of course, to enjoy a wonderful playtime together.

Each book is delightfully illustrated to enhance the activities and create a beautiful, collectible book. Books are available separately, or as a packaged set.

Selected music from this series is also available separately on cassette or compact disc: Round and Round the Garden: Music in My First Year (CD-437), Ride Away on Your Horse: Music, Now I'm One (CD-438), and Frog in the Meadow: Music, Now I'm Two (CD-439). Simple recordings that include only voice, guitar, and string bass follow Feierabend's philosophy that simplicity in musical accompaniment makes it easier for children to learn the important melody of the song. Each recording includes an illustrated booklet with complete lyrics and any special directions for the selected rhymes and songs.

The Book of Wiggles and Tickles, The Book of Bounces, The Book of Lullabies, The Book of Simple Songs and Circles, and The Book of Tapping and Clapping are filled with high quality literature that...

  • appeals to children as well as adults. Literature that is "child-like," not "childish."
  • creates a sense of make believe and develops the imagination, while offering wisdom through a lesson of some sort.
  • is still enjoyable to read or sing after 30-plus repetitions!
  • connects our children to a rich repertoire of folk music and the community of our ancestors.
  • teaches the music of the country to it's people!
