Hand cymbals can create a brilliant and exciting musical effect. They have a rich history dating at least to the time of the Roman Empire. Hand cymbals are made in a wide variety of sizes and sound designs. The hand cymbals demand considerable physical strength and a high level of musical sensitivity.
To Play the Hand Cymbals:
A.
B.
Stand with your feet apart and body weight evenly distributed over both feet.
Grasp each cymbal strap between the thumb and fingers, with the side of each index finger pressing firmly against each cymbal bell for support and control.
Note: The hands are not inserted through the straps.
C.
Hold the cymbals about 6" apart. The left cymbal should be in the 11 o'clock/5 o'clock position, and the right cymbal should be in the 10 o'clock/4 o'clock position.
Note: The cymbals should be played at about chest level.
D.
E.
F.
Hold the left cymbal stationary.
For a pleasant, full-sounding crash, move the right cymbal across and into contact with the stationary left cymbal.
After the "crash," move the cymbals apart.
