The Claves*
The claves consist of a pair of solid, hardwood cylinders that are struck together to produce a unique, penetrating sound. The Spanish word "clave" means "key," and the clave rhythm is "key" to all authentic African and Latin rhythms.

To Play the Claves:

A. Hold one clave lightly (against the fingernails) in a cupped hand.

|
Hold the other clave near one end with the thumb and first two fingers of the other hand.
|

C.
|
|
Strike the clave in the cupped hand with the clave in the other hand. Experiment to determine the best sound.
