The Claves*

The claves consist of a pair of solid, hardwood cylinders that are struck together to produce a unique, penetrating sound. The Spanish word "clave" means "key," and the clave rhythm is "key" to all authentic African and Latin rhythms.

To Play the Claves:

    A.

    A. Hold one clave lightly (against the fingernails) in a cupped hand.

    B.

Hold the other clave near one end with the thumb and first two fingers of the other hand.

    C.

Strike the clave in the cupped hand with the clave in the other hand. Experiment to determine the best sound.
