Carl Schalk, lecturer and clinician at numerous church music workshops
and pastoral conferences, teaches graduate courses in church music
at Concordia University, River Forest, Illinois, where he is Distinguished
Professor of Music Emeritus. He has been referred to as "one
of the most active lecturers and clinicians in the American church
music scene." He participated in the work leading to the publication
of Lutheran Book of Worship (1978), and is a well-known composer
of choral music, hymn settings for choir and congregation, and hymn
tunes, which appear in many current hymnals.
His most recent publications include God's Song in a New Land: Lutheran
Hymnody in America and the companion, Source Documents in American
Lutheran Hymnody; Luther on Music: Paradigms of Praise; and The
Praise of God in Song: An Introduction to Christian Hymnody for
Congregational Study. Schalk also edited the recently released Concordia
Book of American Carols.
Workshops
Writing Effective Hymn Tunes for Congregational Singing
An intensive workshop addressing such topics as what makes for a
good congregational hymn tune, approaches to writing hymn tunes,
effectively introducing new tunes to the congregation. Illustrated
with examples from Thine the Praise: Hymns & Carols of Carl
Schalk, this workshop can include the opportunity for one-on-one
sessions with hymn tune writers attending the workshop.
Optimum length: one full day, can be adjusted to suit local needs.
Participants experience presentations, analyze what makes a good
tune, sing examples of effective tunes, and examine new tunes written
by the group.
