Lou Bergonzi
Louis Bergonzi is Professor of Conducting and Music Education at the University of Illinois, where he specializes in conducting and string education/pedagogy. He is also Conductor of the University Philharmonic. Prior to his appointment at Illinois in 2005, he was on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music for seventeen years, where he was Director of the Rochester–Eastman String Partnership Urban Project, a multifaceted program for preparing studio and group string teachers for work in urban settings. He is a Past-President of the American String Teachers Association and was string specialist and orchestra conductor for the Lexington (MA) Public Schools.
In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dr. Bergonzi has served as a guest conductor for all-state and regional honors youth orchestras throughout the United States and Canada, as well as Guest Conductor of the Hong Kong Summer Youth Orchestras and the Melbourne (Australia) Summer Youth Music. He has been on the faculties of the Eastman Summer Seminar in Hamamatsu (Japan) and the International Workshops. He has written for American String Teacher, NSOA Newsletter, and Journal of Research in Music Education. He is co-author of Effects of Arts Education on Participation in the Arts (National Endowment for the Arts, 1996) and Teaching Music through Performance in Orchestra, Volumes 1–3 (GIA, 2002, 2003, 2007, respectively). His Rounds and Canons for Strings: Shaping Musical Independence is published by Kjos Publishers.
