Kansas seems to be an up-and-coming spawning ground for organists and composers. TV organist/travelog hostess Diane Bish is a native of Kansas, as is John Leavitt, who has well over one hundred items in print, nine of which are published by GIA.
He was an instructor in music theory at Friends University in Wichita and director of music for Immanuel Lutheran Church. He holds a bachelor's degree from Emporia State University and a master's degree from Wichita State University. He has worked closely with the nationally known Singing Quakers, writing, directing and accompanying them. As with so many other church musicians, his teaching duties are augmented by a busy schedule of organ recitals and dedications, lecture-workshops on service playing and the role of the choir in worship.
From the heartland of the United States, he shows clearly that the church music world rapidly shrinks as we share his expertise and talent by way of printed word and performed music. Kansas must contain fertile ground to produce such a prolific and capable musician, whose art continues to flourish. Why did Dorothy ever want to leave?
