With a Lutheran Pastor as father, Edward Klammer and his nine siblings were reared in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Not unusual for a Lutheran family at the time, music played an important part in its formation.
Ed graduated from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois, which launched his career as teacher and church musician in Lutheran worship. In 1950 he turned his career into a new direction when he accepted a position at Concordia Publishing House, official publication arm of the Lutheran Church (Missouri Synod) to develop its music department as both editor and manager. Prior to that time, CPH did not publish a significant amount of music. Under Klammer's direction, it became a significant publisher of church music.
Par of Ed's duties included heading the music editorial committee, and he himself edited music, wrote periodical and book articles, and was a church organist and choir director. His work, and his personal charm, were well known to GIA when, on January 31, 1984, he retired from CPH with what seemed to be a strong desire to continue doing some of what he had done throughout his career.
We approached Ed Klammer with the proposal that he prepare some editions of earlier works from our Ars Antiqua Choralis series. He eagerly agreed and produced fifty-six editions in the years between 1984 and the early nineties when he became ill. The GIA/Klammer editions are all currently in print and serve as a postscript to a career dedicated to serving the Lutheran Church and beyond.
