Sometimes Dan Kantor is mistaken to be Franz Gruber. The error occurs because of the tight association Franz Gruber's "Silent Night" has with Dan Kantor's 
"Night of Silence" (G-2760). This enchanting arrangement of the primal Christmas carol has quickly become one of the most appealing items in a parish's repertory. The singing of the carol with the fluid counter melody has revived hundreds of parish Christmas music programs desperate to have at least one fresh piece for Christmas. The combination of the two tunes seems to have been made in heaven. The matchmaker is the thirty-three-year-old composer who works as a graphic designer in Minneapolis.
With a degree in piano from the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis, his early career in music drew him into the development of music software. As one of the original four developers with Coda, he helped usher in the appearance of Finale, the highly successful music engraving computer software. It is from this strong base in computer wizardry that he has been able to combine his artistic sense with technological expertise. The product has been superior. Some of the GIA products that carry his graphic designs are Coming Home, No Longer Strangers, How Can I Keep from Singing, and Jeanne Cotter's book on keyboard improvisation. His graphic style is just as appealing as his compositional style--both are lean and accessible.
Presently, he is pursuing graduate studies in liberal arts and humanities. For him, however, the study of liberal arts is much more than the quadrivium and a survey course in art history. Consistent with the liberal arts tradition, Dan Kantor bridges well the technology of hardware and software with an artistic sense of proportion and design--essential qualities in both the visual and aural arts. Dan Kantor is a liberal artist.
