Carl Johengen has garnered a reputation for excellence as a composer, singer, voice teacher, and conductor. His compositional talents first drew national attention in 1993 when he captured first prize in a composition contest sponsored by World Library. His winning entry, "Veni Creator Spiritus," was premiered before an audience of 3,000 at the National Association of Pastoral Musicians convention in St. Louis and has been released on CD and cassette. Since then, more than twenty of his liturgical compositions have been published by World Library and other publishers. In June 1994, Carl's work, "I Am the Living Bread," was the winning entry in the "Young New York '94" hymn competition, sponsored by the Archdiocese of New York.
Carl's music appears in several hymnals and hymn supplements, and he has received commissions from several churches. He has been a frequent clinician and performer at national and regional NPM conventions since 1988.
A respected church musician, Carl served for three years as Diocesan Director of Music for the Diocese of Syracuse, presenting workshops, clinics, training programs, and retreats for musicians throughout Central, Northern, and Western New York.
Currently, Carl is Assistant Professor of Voice at the Crane School of Music (State University of New York College at Potsdam). Previously he taught voice at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and at Syracuse University. Carl holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Ithaca College and is nearing the completion of doctoral studies in voice at the Eastman School of Music. In May 1998 he was awarded Eastman's prestigious Performer's Certificate. A tenor, Carl has appeared with the Milwaukee, Syracuse, and Green Bay symphonies, Syracuse Opera, Opera Theater of Rochester, The Publick Musick, Rochester Bach Festival, Society for New Music, oratorio societies across New York State and Vermont, and in such venues as the Boston Early Music Festival and Lincoln Center's Alice Tully Hall. His artistry has received notice in a number of national and international singing competitions, including those sponsored by the National Opera Association, the Concert Artists Guild, and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Carl is available to offer custom workshops, concerts, or other programs at both local parish and diocesan levels.
WorkshopsA Cantor Encounter
This introductory workshop is intended for brand-new cantors or for those interested in exploring the ministry of the cantor. During the four-hour session (perfect for Saturday morning and early afternoon with a lunch or snack break midway), participants will be active for a large portion of the time. Participants will gain insight into the historical and liturgical background of the cantor's ministry, comfort with the physical aspects of the cantor's art, simple techniques to focus and improve vocal abilities, and a sense of the prayerful preparation required of all cantors.
The Cantor's Voice: An Instrument of God's Love
Every minister uses particular tools to "get the job done." Cantors who take their ministry seriously know that their primary tool, the singing voice, requires a great deal of attention. This workshop can be custom-designed to meet specific local needs; it can be a retreat or two-day seminar (for example, Friday evening to Saturday afternoon) or a one-day, two-session workshop. In-depth work in vocal technique will be coupled with unique exercises to free up the singing voice and release each singer's expressive potential.
