Heather Buchanan

Australian-born conductor Heather J. Buchanan is Director of Choral Activities and Assistant Professor of Music at Montclair State University (Upper Montclair, New Jersey), where she conducts the 135-voice Chorale and 36-voice Chamber Singers. Prior to her work at Montclair, she was on the conducting faculty at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. A certified Andover Educator, Buchanan specializes in the teaching of Body Mapping and somatic pedagogy for choral musicians.

Buchanan is a PhD Candidate with the University of New England (Australia), researching the impact of Body Mapping on musicians. She also serves as Chairwoman of Repertoire and Standards for Youth and Student Activities for the New Jersey ACDA. She earned her degrees from the Queensland Conservatorium of Music (Australia, BME) and Westminster Choir College of Rider University (MM). Her publications include the video (2002) and DVD (2004) Evoking Sound (GIA Publications). Buchanan is an experienced choral director and music educator, and is in demand as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator for choral and educational events in the United States and Australia.
