Felix Goebel-Komala traces his ancestry back three hundred years to China and then to Indonesia. His forebears migrated to Hong Kong after World War II where he was born. His genealogy immediately places him in a class that separates him from most of the musicians who are composing for the Church today. For us at GIA he lends a world-class tone.

He came to the United States as an international exchange student while he was in high school. So successful was his stay that he returned to this country, where he began studies at the University of Iowa, the school that bestowed on him the bachelor of music degree. It was there that he became part of the Joe Mattingly Singers, which launched him into this liturgical music career. His flawless playing of the guitar and suave compositional style show that he is one of the most promising of the thirty-something generation of composers and musicians.

The ten titles that make up his Psalm of Hope (G-4403) demonstrate his ability to construct an attractive, singable line. Both singer and player are enriched by his style. The line is never a cliché, and the rhythm is never just an up-down, up-down strum. The rich musicality he exhibits combines well with his multicultural background to provide some of the most successful liturgical music GIA boasts.
