A breath of fresh Gaelic air is being felt across the United States
with the advent of the music of Sue Furlong. This Irish composer
brings to the repertory of the parish musician a beguiling style,
which has stimulated new life in the music programs that might have
grown a little stale. Just one "sing-through" of her
"Eucharistic
Prayer for Children III-Easter Setting" (G-3982) and her
"Good
News Carol" (G-3917) convinces the singer that her music would
add to the parish's music life. This latter carol is scored for
two or three voices, an important consideration of choirs of smaller
numbers. In fact, her music is constructed for the assembly and
the ensemble who could never perform George Frederick Handel or
Petr Eben, but deserve high-quality religious music as part of their
religious expressions.
Sue Furlong presently lives in Wexford, Ireland, and teaches at
the Wexford School of Music. She holds the bachelor of music degree
from Durham University in England. She is also director of the youth
choir at the Bride Street Church in Wexford. Her setting of Psalm
63,
"O God, You Are My God" (G-3922), has been part of
the BBC television program Song of Praise. She brings to the church
of the United States an approachable and lyrical repertory, which
is no surprise considering her Gaelic origins-the land of poets
and mystics. Her name is added now to the growing list of GIA composers
who come from shores of Iona, Scotland, and the countryside of France,
be it the community of Taizé or the monastery of Sylvanès.
Perhaps from this amalgam of several national music styles, a new
music style will emerge. Sue Furlong will be an important contributor.
