The combination of a music educator and church musician is not an
unusual one. Walter Ehret is such a double-role person. A graduate
of the Juilliard School of Music and the Teachers College of Columbia
University, he has served as an adjunct faculty member of three
universities, taught both instrumental and choral music for forty
years in several New Jersey and New York school systems, and is now
retired as district coordinator of music for the public schools
of Scarsdale, New York. Music education makes up just part of his
musical life.
Active as a clinician, conductor, and choral literature specialist,
he has functioned in these various capacities at over three hundred
workshops in thirty states. Although he lives in semiretirement,
he is very much in demand in the workshop and clinic circuit. he
capitalizes on this long and extensive career in choral conducting
by producing over two thousand publications that deal with music
production in some way. The GIA catalog numbers thirty of his editions
and arrangements. "Angels from the Realms of Glory" (REGENT
SQUARE, G-1853) and the French carol "Christ Comes Anew"
(NOËL NOUVELET, G-1842) show his craft to be of the highest
level.
Such high skill does not come from an overnight flash of talent.
His capability and competency reveal a creative personality whose
high energy level places him in the top rung of music makers in
the Church.
