Paul Bouman was born in Hamburg, Minnesota, in 1918. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education from Concordia College and a Master of Music from Northwestern University. He did postgraduate work at Westphalian Church Music School in Herford, Germany. He was director of music and music teacher in the parish's schools at Ebenezer Lutheran Church, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; St. Paul Lutheran Church, Melrose Park, Illinois; and Grace Lutheran Church, River Forest, Illinois. Mr. Bouman is now retired, but is still an active member of Grace Lutheran Church
Mr. Bouman received the Spiritus Christi Medal from Concordia College, the Te Deum Laudamus Award from Zion Lutheran Church, and a Doctor of Humane Letters from Christ Seminary--Seminex in St. Louis, Missouri. He was a staff member at Lutheran Worship Conferences, Chorister's Guild Conferences, American Guild of Organist Conferences, teaching about children's choirs. As a member of the Illinois Grade School Music Association, his children's choirs always received top ratings in the Illinois Grade School Contests.
In 1971, he and Carl Schalk co-founded the Bach Vesper Cantata Series at Grace Lutheran Church in River Forest, Illinois. In 1984, he was invited to prepare the children's choirs for the Bethlehem Bach Festival in Bethlehem, Pennslyvania. He was a member of the Advisory Board for the Bach Choir in Bethlehem as well. For two years, he was conductor of the treble choir at the Community Music School of Allentown, Pennslyvania. In November 1992, he was jointly invited by the National Orff Society and Minnesota ACDA to be guest conductor for Honors Children's Choir for their conventions in Minneapolis, and commissioned by them to compose for that occasion. The result was "Three Rhymes from A Child's Garden of Verses (R. L. Stevenson)" (published by Earthsongs, Corvallis, Oregon).
Paul Bouman is married to Victoria Bartling and has five children: three sons and two daughters.
